Ten I chose in no specific order are:
ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell (All animals are equal, but some animals are MORE equal still gives me chills)
ENDERS GAME by Orson Scott Card
FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON by Daniel Keys
FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley
I, ROBOT by Isaac Asimov (He also wrote giant books on Shakespeare criticism)
THE HANDMAID'S TALE by Margaret Atwood
THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY by JRR Tolkien
NEUROMANCER by William Gibson
THE WATCHMEN by Alan Moore
SOLARIS by Stanislaw Lem
done and done.
ReplyDeleteI voted for:
1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. The Watchmen
3. Space Trilogy - C.S. Lewis (because Chronicles of Narnia was nowhere to be found)
4. Wicked (yes, the book that spawned the musical)
5. Ender's Game
6. Dark Tower Series - Steven King (haven't read them all, but I want to)
7. Brave New World
8. The Simarillion
9. Princess Bride
10. The Prestige
(Okay, 9 and 10 I voted for because of their movies, which are good. Interestingly, I saw the movie versions of a lot of these on the list including: I, Robot, I am Legend, and The TIme Travelers Wife --which was terrible--)
Curiously missing: Chronicles of Narnia, The Bartimaeus Trilogy (which would have been 4) and His Dark Materials Trilogy (which would have been 5). I also would have liked to have seen Artemis Fowl Series and Faerie Wars. I do realize that these are YA novels. But they are great.
My answers.
ReplyDelete1. American Gods- Neil Gaimon
2. Cat's Cradle- Kurt Vonnegut
3. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep- Philip K. Dick
4. Ender's Game- Scottie C.
5. The Foundation Trilogy- Asimov
6. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- My Boyfriend
7. LOTR
8. Watchman
9. Watership Down- (Richard Adams)
10. 1984
Had to vote for Ender's Game. And LOTR for obvious reasons. (I can't see LOTR not ending up on this list.)
I picked 1984 instead of Animal Farm just because I think 1984 is the quintessential dystopia. Though Animal Farm has some of the best political commentary in any sci-fi EVER.
Also I had to pick Hitchhiker's Guide because Douglas Adams is my boyfriend and he would be disappointed if he didn't make it on the list.
@Allya- Btw. Why is Chronicles of Narnia not on this list? That's so strange to me.
ReplyDelete@A & C: I emailed them and its because it counts as children's fiction and that's why they also left off other classics like wrinkle in time.
ReplyDelete@Cylon- Ahhh. Well, that's too bad but I understand that you have to try and cut down the list somehow. I'm surprised Alan Moore is on there, since he's a graphic novelist.
ReplyDelete@Cerasi: It's on there because it was Time's 2000 list of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century.
