This is a much happier post than whenever my last one was. I was looking up how to use a semi-colon, because I'm applying to this internship at a local arts magazine and I'm sending a cover letter, writing samples, etc. Also, I realized that I'm a graduated English major that has NO idea of how to use a semi-colon. Anyway, I find this awesome thing from The Oatmeal about how to use a semi-colon.
In semi-colon related business, there's a quote I like by Kurt Vonnegut about the semi-colon. I do love him so.
Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.
Haha, what an enjoyable post.
ReplyDeleteI use semi-colons; I used to overuse them. But it was kinda funny how angry workshoppers got when we talked about semi-colons in class once. I had a healthy amount of the confusing punctuation mark and SO many people did not like it. Even the TA. I was like whatevs, just cuz yall losers don't know what in the hell to do with this funky thing, doesn't mean I don't.
Anyway. I've toned down my usage of the semi-colon but it still makes me chuckle at how confused and upset these people were that I used it.
Also, awesome about the application, Cerasi! Let us know how it goes.
Good luck! And thanks, I needed that site--it'll help me polish my grammar for Thailand in October.
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how antsy I am to get out of the United States. I almost want to apply to a teaching offer for offers that need teachers "immediately"--means I can leave sooner.
Anyway, tell us about the application and how it goes. We'll anxiously wait for it :)
