SMASHing or GLEEful?

I pretty much stopped watching Glee.  I don't have time and even if I did, I've been starting to feel like I"m wasting it watching this show.

However, earlier this week I was laid up on the couch icing my hurt hamstring, and I was flipping through the channels.  Glee was on, and nothing else was, so I watched the last half of the show.

I don't know if any of you are still keeping up with it, but the plot is pretty terrible.  Rachel is still obnoxious.  But the songs are still pretty good.  This particular episode featured an appearance from Matt Bomer, who is in White Collar (a show I do watch, about how he is a former criminal- forger/thief - and since he got caught, is working with an FBI agent in the white collar crime division to catch other criminals.):

And who is quite delectable.

He plays Darren Chris' older brother.  And they have a song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cay2dnuhcs

Yeah.  I pretty much came when I saw it.  (Matt Bomer sings?! How can he get any better??)

But other than this anomaly of outstanding song selection and fabulous guest appearance, I have kind of given up on Glee.

But is there another show to fill the musical void?  Why yes, there is.  It's called Smash.  It's about a group of people trying to produce (and write and direct and act) a Broadway musical.  It's kinda like the grown-up version of Glee; it's everything Glee wants to be when it grows up, but is still kind of hopelessly stuck in Ohio.

Smash is pretty fabulous.  It's well-written, it has compelling characters, it has fabulous musical numbers.  Really it's everything I wanted from Glee, and more because these people are actually doing it as a career and it feels like a backstage pass to how musicals get made.  (And being in love with musical theater- this is a huge plus!)

Also, I want to mention, how they show the writing of a musical.  (Which should be of particular interest to Cerasi and Ada, you playwrights.)  The writer and composer/lyricist are a team that have worked together writing musicals for years, and they decide to begin working on a musical they have thought of doing before: one all about Marilyn Monroe.  (Which should pique Cylon's interest)

Overall, it's a well-made show that has successfully replaced Glee for me.  Oddly enough, it was my Dad who got me into watching this show.  And now we tune in Mondays at 9pm central to enjoy the musical romp together.  Here's a link to Hulu if you want to start from the beginning: http://www.hulu.com/smash

So, if any of you do watch it, you'll have to tell me, is it better to be have Glee or be a Smash?

  1. Stop watching Glee? If you insist, but I'm warning you, it's time to invest in a pair of sharp salad forks. You see, the only other way I know to get to that level of pain and annoyance is to STAB YOURSELF IN THE EYES WITH SALAD FORKS!

Okay, that was a little dramatic, but still, I am super excited to watch Smash. I would watch it now, but Hulu will only give me a 90 second preview of the episodes from earlier in the season and putlocker is blocked at the cafe I'm currently in. (Seriously hulu, this is why I stream show. BECAUSE THE SHOWS I WANT AREN'T EASILY AVAILABLE! ARG!)

I love the way you describe Smash as "everything Glee wants to be when it grows up." And isn't that really what all of us that are watching Glee are looking for? Not Glee but the evolved version of Glee. Or to put it in Pokemon terms, maybe Smash it the awesome Charizard to Glee's homely, unloveable Charmeleon.

Also, I watch the clip of Darren Criss and his fake brother and my god, I LOVED it. It actually sort of made me want to watch that episode. I might. I just finished my internship and unemployment is what got me into Glee in the first place.

Even without knowing any of the context of the episode it had an emotional effect on me. I think I might listen to it again.

Although really, Blaine. Red pants with a black shirt that has vertical white stripes? Why do his clothes always give me a headache?

@Cylon (or possibly Allya)- is hulu plus worth it? I mean now that I have a little bit of income I'm willing to spend money to legitimately view shows, but I've always found hulu to be full of ads that you have to go back through every time the internet does something weird. (When I watched Misfits on hulu it would always cut out and then I'd have to find my place again and it was a royal pain.)

  2. That looks so interesting! I haven't seen either GLEE or SMASH (okay, just some GLEE, and really I just look on youtube for their songs), but SMASH definitely sounds more interesting to me than GLEE. (But seriously, Darren Criss? HOT PIECE OF ---- oops, inappropriate? Even though his choice of wardrobe was kinda...icky, HE'S STILL ---- oops!) But Hulu doesn't work in Thailand, so that might not work out. I've been watching 'Once Upon a Time' by downloading via torrent, so hopefully I can do that with SMASH too.

Also, that clip? AWESOME. I'm going to sing it forever, even though it makes me all kinda guilty, kinda HECKYES about it. Anywhooooo--will try to watch it!!

  3. @ Cerasi: I don't have Hulu Plus. I don't even know if Hulu Plus gets rid of ads for tv shows. If there's something I want to watch that isn't on there, I just go to tv duck, or sidereel, or just google it.

And I agree about Blaine's poor wardrobe choices. I'm sorry, but no one, NO ONE, needs to have brightly colored pants. (There was this cute little kid walking around the back of church on Easter with bright green pants. NO. Parents, what what what are you doing?)

Lol. Smash is a Charizard compared to Glee. But not like the obnoxious one Ash had, an elegant, compelling, and powerful one that can sing.

@Ada: I don't think Darren being a hot piece of ass is inappro-pro. Cuz he is. How old is he anyway? I thought they were all older than high school... Google says he's 25. So VERY appropriate. Alas, Matt Bomer is 34. A little less appro-pro.

You watch "Once Upon a Time" too?? Lol. I watch it usually while I'm making jewelry.

  4. @Allya: yeah, Darren Criss is totes appro-pro (dude, I love that word) in the age department, but there's nothing wrong with 34 either. Don't worry, Matt Bomer is totes yours!

AND YES I DO!! I'm waiting for the goshdarn new episode to come out, and I'm so excited, but I won't be able to watch it until I'm in Thailand, and the thought of going back to Thailand seriously gives me migraines. Like right now, I have a migraine. -goes to watch more Darren Criss-
